In order to better serve our clients, McLean Consulting has collected a list of the most frequently asked questions about our products. If you have a question which is not listed here, or if you are having trouble with one or more of our products (demo or release versions), please feel free to contact our support team at support@mcleanconsult.ca

Q. Do I need to install Property Manger for Exchange on an Exchange Server?

A. Yes. Property Manager is designed to interact directly with an Exchange Server.

Q. Do I need to run a separate installation for every Exchange Server on the site?

A. No. Property Manager will operate for all users of the Exchange Site it belongs to, even if installed only on a single server.

Q. I can install Property Manager, but why do I get an error when I try to start the Property Manager service?

A. This is the most common problem encountered with Property Manger. The usual cause of the problem is that there is no Organization Forms Folder set up in the Exchange Server on which Property Manager is installed, or Property Manager does not have proper permissions on this folder. This folder is needed to store forms used by the software.

To create and organization Forms Folder, first open the Exchange Administrator application, and select Forms Administrator from the Tools Menu. The dialogue box for the Organization Forms Library will appear. If there is no entry for Organization Forms Folder by default, all you have to do is verify the language selection and click on OK to create the folder. Once the folder is created, you must give the Property Manager Service owner permissions on it. Giving the service owner permissions will not adversely affect the system. You may then start the service normally.

If you are encountering problems starting the service, verify that the Exchange Client is installed and running properly on the server computer.

Q. How do I find out why the Property Manager Service will not start?

A. If you have properly set up both the Organization Forms Folder and Exchange Client on the server computer and still receive an error message when starting the Property Manager Service, open the Application Log in the Windows NT Event Viewer. All entries for Property Manager will be listed as ‘MCPROPMAN’, with a description of the error.

Q. The Property Manager Service started, but why can’t I see the User Form in the Organization Forms Folder?

A. It may take several minutes for the User Form to replicate throughout a site, especially if the site is large or slowed. The User Form will appear once it is done replicating.

Q. Can I upgrade to version 3.0 while my users are still running the version 2.0 client-extension?

A. Yes, you can upgrade to 3.0 without changing the 2.0 client-extension however the new auto-reminder feature will not be supported by the 2.0 client-extension. You must install the 3.0 client-extension to enable this feature. .

Q. Multiple site problems.

A. Make sure the Property Manager account from all sites have ownership permission on the organization form. Go to the original organization forms setup site and make sure that there is forwarded a replica to all the other Exchange sites. You can do this in Exchange Admin, at the top you'll see PUBLIC-FOLDERS, drill down under system-folders, open up organization forms and then replicas and under the replica tab add the other servers from the other sites.

*Note - Software Limitations:

Change authorizations can only be done by users with mailboxes within the same Exchange Site as the mailbox where changes are to take place.

Q. How do I change the configuration of Property Manager once it has been installed?

A. The configuration of Property Manager can be changed the Exchange Administrator application. Open the application and select the ‘MC Property Manager’ mailbox agent in the Recipients container. Once selected, click on Properties in the File menu. This will allow you to change the configuration.

Q. I have changed the configuration of Property Manager, but nothing has changed in the user form. Why?

A. It may take several minutes for the new changes to take effect and for the new form to be generated. Once the changes have taken effect, a new User Form will be installed with the updated specifications.

Q. Do users have to install the Property Manager Client Extension to access the User Form?

A. No. Users who do not have the extension installed can open the form from the normal menus of their Exchange Client or Outlook software. The extension is only meant to simplify Property Manager for the end-user by providing a single menu item and/or toolbar button to open the form.

Q. Can the authorizer modify the properties that the user entered?

A. Yes. The authorizer form allows the authorizer to change any of the property values.

Q. Will Property Manager damage my Exchange directory if I remove it?

A. No. Property Manager only installs a service and a mailbox agent. These are removed when the software is uninstalled. Property Manager does not modify any existing Exchange objects.

Q. Can a user change the properties of another user with Property Manager?

A. No. Property Manager will only allow access to the attributes in the mailbox the user is logged on to.

Q. How do I find the version of property Manager I have installed?

A. Using the Exchange Administrator application, display the properties of the following object: <Site>…Configuration…Add-ins…Extension for MC Property Manager for i386.

Q. What happens if a user sends e-mail directly to Property Manager? Will the messages build up in the box?

A. No. Property Manager automatically deletes any messages not related to its function.

Q. How do I remove the Client Extension from the Outlook toolbar?

A. Simply run the ExtUnst.exe program in the Client directory of the CD-ROM or download. The button will be removed automatically.

Q. When I try to start the Property Manager Service I get a NT error code 2140. Why?

A. This is not a Property Manager error. This is a generic NT "out of resources" error, indicating that resources in use by other programs must be freed before the service can start. This error is commonly encountered on systems running virus scanners, or other programs that require constant resources. This error could also indicate a memory leak. Rebooting the server has proven to rectify this problem.

Q. Can remote setup be used repeatedly to stagger installation across an organization?

A. It is best to install all intended sites at once with remote setup. However, installation can be staggered if remote setup is run each time from a site where Property Manager has not previously been installed. McLean Consulting does not recommend staggering setup in this way, as it could produce unusual errors.

Q. Property Manager was installed fine and the service was started, but after a few hours the service stops for no reason. I can restart the service again, but the same thing happens a few hours later. Why?

A. This is a rare problem with Property Manager, and it is unknown why it occurs, although restarting the server will clear it up in most cases.

Q. Can the forms be customized?

A. No. Property Manager is designed for simplicity and functionality out-of-the-box. The only alterations that can be made are to the languages displayed on the labels.

Q. Can I alter Property Manager to suit my needs?

A. Legally, anyone who has purchased a Property Manager license is entitled to alter the source code. However, altered code cannot be recompiled and sold, and licensing restrictions still apply as per number of sites. Altered versions of Property Manager are not supported by McLean Consulting, and McLean Consulting strictly enforces adherence to its guidelines to protect intellectual property. We will not provide the source code to anyone. If alterations are made, the client must find ways to perform them independently.

Q. How do I find what the Property Manager mailbox is? I've never opened it before.

A. It is listed in the global address list as "MC Property Manager" - it appears as a service-mailbox.

Q. The remind users box is set to 0 but users are still getting reminder messages poping up even after changing properties.

A. The problem here is that the form has to be reloaded at the client end for the exchange server PMan properties to reflect at the client end. So if the properties are changed on the server and a client is due a reminder, the client will see the reminder. The reminder box will stop appearing only once the client has invoked the form as that is the time when client end is synchronized with the exchange server.
